At Gryphon Games & Comics, we play two formats for our Pokemon events.
Expanded
This is the format typically played at our Sunday Pokemon League. This includes the last 30 sets worth of cards, dating back to around 2011. This means you and your kids can play with sets that are a little older, not just the newest ones.
Standard
Standard events only allow cards that have been released in the last couple of years. This includes:

BREAKpoint
Fates Collide
Steam Seige
Evolutions
Sun & Moon sets
These sets change each year as the formats evolve.
