In 2013 Charles was in college to be a veterniarian and Roger was running his own successful pet store (Rockstar Pets in Tooele). After finals in May, Charles was ranting to Roger on the phone about everything he wanted to do in his future.
"One day I'll become a vet and earn enough money to pay off my student loans and open my own practice. Then I'll eventually earn enough money to have someone else run my practice while I retire and open a comic and gaming store".
"That's a really round about way to open a comic and gaming store, why don't you just do it now?"
"I'm a broke college student, I don't have enough money to open up a store."
"Look at Kevin Smith, he sold off his entire comic book collection and put the funding of Clerks on his credit cards, and look how it turned out for him. If this is something you want to do let's just do it."
The next day they went on a road trip for Roger's business. By the time they got back home the idea for The Nerd Store was born. Over the course of the next few months Charles saved as much as he could, which came out to about $400, and put his few Robert Kirkman autographed Walking Dead comics up for sale. The two toured local city and county fairs with a few comics, Magic cards, and football cards from their collections in one booth, and Roger's pet store hired out Charles to do a spinny wheel giving out Firebelly Toads and Hermit Crabs at a dollar a spin. From these fairs the two managed to scrape together enough money for a booth at the first Salt Lake Comic Con. It was reality now, The Nerd Store was going to happen! That whole first convention they told everyone that there would be a new store opening up, in the Gateway Mall. This never happened. The day they went down to sign the lease and start with a small 300 square foot location at the Gateway, they were told there was an issue with the lease and they wouldn't be allowed to open. All that marketing wasted. They instead went and met with the Valley Fair Mall, which welcomed them with open arms. There was a lot of build out to be done on that 3000 square foot location. With Roger still having to work his full time job over at Rockstar Pets he was not able to help much on the build out. That left Charles two weeks to get everything ready. The first idea for the store came in May of 2013 and by October 9, 2013, The Nerd Store was a reality.
